Larry Ellison Unveils the “Always Free” Tier

There was plenty of news for developers at Oracle Code One in San Francisco last month. Oracle announced Java 13, blending big features and subtle fixes in what is now the fourth release of its new six-month cadence. Coders loved the language and performance evolution as much as this year’s rocket-powered, surfboard-riding mascot.

In the Groundbreaker Hub at Code One, a massive and mysterious device made the news (thanks, Tom’s Hardware!) for its unique approach to assembling a supercomputer out of more than a thousand Raspberry Pi’s.

But data was the star of the totally redesigned event. After Larry Ellison unveiled the “Always Free” program, Oracle saw a spike of tens of thousands of cloud sign-ups in two weeks. Developers can get two Oracle Autonomous Databases and essential Oracle Cloud Infrastructure building blocks (think virtual machines, object storage, and data egress). You also tap free tools such as Oracle Application Express (Oracle APEX), drivers for many programming languages, REST services for publishing data, and even a popular data science notebook.

What will you build with your always free account? Write me with your thoughts.
