Jay Johnson moves into rare company

Good morning from Omaha.

Yes, still in Omaha. We had to book our flights for the College World Series with a Tuesday return in case the Tigers made it to the championship final but were forced to play a Game 3 Monday.

Of course there was no Game 3, as LSU took care of Coastal Carolina in two, 1-0 and 5-3. But there were no flights to be had Sunday by the time we got done with our postgame work.

First-world problems, I realize, but it does allow me to get this newsletter out before we head to the airport.

The Tigers of course had their charter flight to take them home Monday. Before they left we caught up with LSU coach Jay Johnson, who described what his life was like in the hours after winning the championship. In my column, I write about where this championship, LSU's second in three years under Johnson, puts him in the pantheon of coaching greats at LSU and in college baseball itself.

We covered the Tigers departure from Omaha as well as their arrival back at Alex Box Stadium with a story on their return as well as a photo gallery from the afternoon's festivities.

In honor of LSU's eighth College World Series title, the Empire State Building in New York was lit purple and gold (very cool looking if you haven't seen it).

And finally, LSU women's basketball coach Kim Mulkey was spotted doing her civic duty Monday, sitting among a pool of potential jurors at the 19th JDC.

Forgive me, but a bad pun about a full court press leaps to mind.

Please be sure to go to Store.NOLA.com to order your LSU baseball championship posters and pre-order our commemorative book, "Great Eight."

That's all for now, folks. We're packing up and leaving on a jet plane. Catch you back in Louisiana.
