Jeff Landry's bid to rewrite constitution is blasted

BY JESSICA WILLIAMS | Capitol News Bureau Editor

Constitution rewrite: Gov. Jeff Landry's bid to rewrite the constitution was blasted in a public hearing Tuesday, Tyler Bridges reports. The plan would see lawmakers remove some portions of the current constitution into state statute, allowing them to be more easily changed by Landry and lawmakers.

Death penalty: A Senate committee on Tuesday bucked Landry by voting to scrap nitrogen gas from the state's list of execution methods for death row prisoners, James Finn reports. Landry got lawmakers to approve the controversial method in an earlier session.

Mike Johnson: Facing an insurrection among the U.S. House's right wing, House Speaker Mike Johnson said Tuesday he would not resign and called the calls for his ouster 'absurd,' Mark Ballard reports.
