Jeff Landry wants to reshape Louisiana's justice system

Gov. Jeff Landry ordered Louisiana lawmakers back to Baton Rouge for 17 days starting on Feb. 19 to consider two dozen tough-on-crime policy priorities, including restrictions on parole eligibility and the amount of time offenders can have shaved off their sentences for good behavior.

Just weeks after the state Legislature redrew its congressional maps to add a second majority-Black district, a federal judge has ruled that Louisiana’s state legislative maps also must be redrawn.

U.S. District Chief Judge Shelly Dick wrote that the current maps do not give Black voters a fair opportunity to elect representatives of their choice.
