At the fair, it was MPR Day and Republican gubernatorial candidate Dr. Scott Jensen and Minnesota Secretary of State DFLer Steve Simon were at Dan Patch Park with our politics team.

Many Jensen supporters in the crowd questioned why Gov. Walz has not agreed to a debate against Jensen. This morning, MPR News confirmed it has a debate for Walz and Jensen booked on Oct. 28, just one week before the midterms. 

Jensen told MPR News' Mike Mulcahy he will not be releasing his tax returns until he is Governor. "Before then, I honestly don't think we can trust the media to stay focused on the issues," he said.

At State Fair, Walz, Jensen try to make campaigns stick
With a little more than two months left before Election Day, the annual end-of-summer gathering offered contenders a chance to meet thousands of voters each day. For Jensen — who is vying to unseat DFL Gov. Tim Walz this fall and still lags in name recognition — the interactions were critical.
 
Iron Range officers cleared in fatal Chisholm shooting
St. Louis County Attorney Kimberly Maki said county sheriff’s deputy Cody Dillinger and Virginia, Minn. police officer Nicholas Grivna were justified in killing Michael David Johnson, 38, who they were trying to arrest on a felony stalking charge filed in Morrison County.
 
Klobuchar popular at Fair; coy on White House run
One of the most popular politicians at the Minnesota State Fair this year is not on the ballot in the midterm elections. And after an unsuccessful run for president in 2020, many fairgoers and others are wondering whether Sen. Amy Klobuchar still has her sights set beyond Minnesota.
Brand new booster paired with some hopeful COVID trends
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention approved a new COVID-19 booster shot yesterday that targets the recently circulating BA.4 and BA.5 subvariants. The new Pfizer-BioNTech booster is available for anyone age 12 or older, while Moderna’s new version is for anyone age 18 or older.  
Autism centers say they are in a staffing crisis
In a trend that is more acute in the last two years, centers for autistic people in Minnesota have been struggling to find enough staff members — and have the money to pay them.
 
 
Weekend weather: Plenty of sun, comfy temps Saturday through Labor Day
There is a chance of occasional scattered showers and thunderstorms mainly in the southeastern half of Minnesota and western Wisconsin Friday afternoon and evening. The National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center shows a marginal risk of severe weather from southeastern Minnesota into Wisconsin:
