First Lady Jill Biden's comparison of Latinos to tacos has been widely criticized by advocacy groups and politicians as questions mount about the Democratic Party's ability to win the Latino vote in the upcoming midterm elections. During a speech at the LatinX IncluXion Luncheon at the 2022 UnidosUS Annual Conference in San Antonio, Texas, on Monday, Biden discussed the "diversity" of the Latino community, suggesting that the differences between subgroups of Latinos were "as beautiful as the
blossoms of Miami and as unique as the breakfast tacos here in San Antonio." |
The National Association for Hispanic Journalists condemned her remarks, stating, "Using breakfast tacos to try to demonstrate the uniqueness of Latinos in San Antonio demonstrates a lack of cultural knowledge and sensitivity to the diversity of Latinos in the region." Multiple Latinas running for elected office also took issue with Biden's remarks, with Rep. Mayra Flores, R-Texas, calling Biden's taco comparison an example of "liberal pandering." Anna Paulina Luna, a Republican running to represent Florida's 13th Congressional District, dubbed the controversy over Biden's remarks "Tacogate" in a tweet Tuesday. Yesli Vega, who is running as a Republican to represent Virginia's 7th Congressional District, called Biden out on
Twitter, noting that her "heritage" and "culture" " are more than tacos." Biden's remarks come as polls suggest Latinos are losing steam with the Democratic Party. While CNN exit polling found that 65% of Latinos supported Democrat Joe Biden in the 2020 presidential election, just 24% of Latino respondents in a Quinnipiac University poll currently approve of the president's job performance. Beni Johnson, the wife of Bethel Chuch Senior Leader Bill Johnson, has passed away at the age of 67 following a lengthy battle with cancer. Bill Johnson shared the news on his social media accounts early Thursday, writing, "Healthy and Free" alongside a photo of his wife. After her 2018 cancer diagnosis, Johnson shared that she walked out of the doctor's office, stunned by the discovery. "When this all began in March and I walked out of the doctor's office shocked. I asked Jesus, 'what do I do now?' I heard Jesus tell me, 'just love me.' I said, 'I can do this' ... There has been so much peace and at times those decisions that have to be made the peace has helped me navigate through." Read more. |

A University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill excavation team in Israel has discovered the first known depiction of two biblical heroines from the Old Testament. The decade-long effort to unearth nearly 1,600-year-old mosaics in an ancient Jewish synagogue at Huqoq, which was temporarily paused due to the COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns, unearthed a large mosaic panel depicting the prophetess and judge Deborah and military commander Barak lead the Israelites in victory over the Canaanites, led by the general Sisera, as described in the fourth chapter of Judges. The Bible describes how Sisera fled to the tent of Jael, a Kenite woman, who ended up slaying the general by driving a tent peg through his temple while he slept. The Episcopal Church has voted to approve the merger of two dioceses in Texas, one of whom lost its property, name and assets in court to a breakaway conservative group. During the mainline denomination's General Convention on Saturday, the House of Deputies approved a resolution for the merger of the Episcopal Church in North Texas (ECNTX), formerly known as the Episcopal Diocese of Fort Worth, with the Episcopal Diocese of Texas. The House of Bishops subsequently approved it on Monday. Bishop Scott Mayer, bishop provisional of North Texas, expressed his gratitude at the General Convention, telling attendees that he was "looking forward to a wonderful future." Read more. |
