JIM ROGERS’ Worldview 20 Years Later

Jim Rogers, Michael Oliver and Quinton Hennigh return on this week’s show.

Behind the wheel of a sunburst-yellow, custom-built Mercedes, Jim and his fiancée, Paige Parker, began their “Millennium Adventure” from Iceland on January 1, 1999. They traveled through 116 countries, including many where most have rarely ventured, such as Saudi Arabia, Myanmar, Angola, Sudan, Congo, Colombia and East Timor. They drove through war zones, deserts, jungles, epidemics, and blizzards. They had many narrow escapes all of which are chronicled in Jim’s book published in 2003 “Adventure Capitalist – The ultimate Road Trip.” In the inside jacket of the book, Jim wrote, “While I have never patronized a prostitute, I know that one can learn more about a country from speaking to the madam of a brothel or a black marketeer than from meeting a foreign minister.”

By age 37, Jim had made a fortune as a partner with George Soros at the Quantum Fund. He was psychologically prepared for retirement at that stage of his life. He would have worked longer but suddenly chose to retire over a moral conflict with Soros. In subsequent years, Jim managed his own portfolio, taught at Columbia Univ. and was frequently seen on television shows. With his reputation intact and a desire to understand the world as it actually is as opposed to the propaganda imposed on us, we will seek Jim’s version of the world 20 years later and how he would suggest it be navigated.

Michael will apply his momentum and structural analysis of key markets to help us know what to expect and Quinton will help us understand the economic potential of the Goliath Resources’ Golddigger gold and silver project in B.C.

Jim Rogers

Jim Rogers, a native of Alabama, is an author, financial commentator and successful international investor based in Singapore and Chairman of Beeland Interests, Inc. Frequently featured in The Washington Post, The New York Times, Barron’s, Forbes, Wall Street Journal, The Financial Times, and publications dealing with the economy or finance, he has also appeared as a visiting professor at Columbia University.

After attending Yale and Oxford University, Jim Rogers co-founded the Quantum Fund, a global-investment partnership. He then decided to retire at age 37. Continuing to manage his own portfolio, Jim Rogers kept busy as a professor of finance at the Columbia University Graduate School of Business, and, in 1989 and 1990, as the moderator of WCBS's 'The Dreyfus Roundtable' and FNN's 'The Profit Motive with Jim Rogers'. In 1990-1992, Jim Rogers fulfilled his lifelong dream: motorcycling 100,000 miles across six continents, which landed him in the Guinness Book of World Records.

Quinton Hennigh is a member of the Crescat Capital management team and a director. He serves Crescat as the firm’s geologic and technical advisor. He is a globally renowned exploration geologist with 30+ years of precious metals mining experience. Dr. Hennigh began his career in gold exploration after obtaining his PhD in Geology/Geochemistry from the Colorado School of Mines. Early in his career he worked for major gold mining companies including Homestake Mining (now Barrick Gold Corp.), Newcrest Mining, and Newmont Corp. Later, Dr. Hennigh founded Novo Resources Corp (TSXV: NVO), acting as its CEO and currently serving as Non-Executive Co-Chairman. He has played a key role in major global discoveries such as Novo’s Pilbara assets in Western Australia, First Mining Gold’s Springpole gold deposit in Ontario, Kirkland Lake Gold’s Fostervillegold mine in Australia, the Rattlesnake Hills gold deposit in Wyoming, and Lion One’s Tuvatu gold project in Fiji, among many others.

J. Michael Oliver entered the financial services industry in 1975 on the Futures side, joining E.F. Hutton’s International Commodity Division, NYC. He studied under David Johnson, head of Hutton’s Commodity Division and Chairman of the COMEX.

In the 1980’s Oliver began to develop his own momentum-based method of technical analysis. In 1987 Oliver, along with his futures client accounts (Oliver had trading POA) technically anticipated and captured the Crash. Oliver began to realize that his emergent momentum-structural-based tools should be further developed into a full analytic methodology.

In 1992 he was asked by the Financial VP and head of Wachovia Bank’s Trust Department to provide soft dollar research to Wachovia. Within a year Oliver shifted from brokerage to full-time technical research. MSA has provided its proprietary technical research services to financial and asset management clients continually since 1992. Oliver is the author of The New Libertarianism: Anarcho-Capitalism.
