"A Dangerous Man" by Robert Crais

I’ve talked about ”Bridgerton” before on The Thread so I’ll move on to a few characters I love who deserve their own streaming series and then the characters you nominated for best in show. The "world’s greatest detective," Elvis Cole, stars in Robert Crais’ detective novels but I want Cole’s friend and fixer, Joe Pike, to make it to the small screen. He’s a taciturn, take-no-crap, sunglasses-wearing bear of a man with tattooed arrows on his arms and a moral compass that makes him surprisingly vulnerable. I also think Marie Mitchell, the FBI agent-turned secret agent in Lauren Wilkinson’s “American Spy” could have a Carrie Matheson-like career far beyond the pages of the novel. She’s one of the few Black women in spy fiction and Wilkinson has imbued her with defiance and razor-sharp smarts. So, which characters do you want to see leap from page to screen? Jeromy Tweeted about Ellen, the mother and wife in Ken Follett’s “Pillars of the Earth,” a terrific novel. Jeromy writes: “I’ve often thought it would be great to get her backstory in more detail.” Naomi is calling for Anna Pigeon from the excellent Nevada Barr series, which is set in America’s national parks and protected lands. Think of the opportunity for beautiful sweeping shots on TV! Leah votes for Johanna Lindsey’s “Malory” family series, which began in 1985 with “Love Only Once.” Jim nominates Ed Baker’s “Frog Princess” books, a YA series that begin when Princess Emma steels herself to kiss a verbose frog and becomes one herself! Amphibian adventures ensue. Cynthia and Karin mentioned a speculative fiction series I’d never heard of called “The Murderbot Diaries” by Martha Wells and it looks sensational. A listener recommended a screen treatment for “Little Dog” from the stunning Ocean Vuong novel, “On Earth, We’re Briefly Gorgeous” and Steven wants to see Peter Grant, the supernatural, multiracial detective from the “Rivers of London” series get his due. Excellent suggestions. Let’s hope the executives at Amazon & Netflix are listening! Who would play the lead role in your page-to-screen series? Tweet me @KerriMPR. — Kerri Miller | MPR News |
