February 18, 2025

Good morning. Today, we’ve got a list of NYC shows to see this week, ranging from the works of Tabboo!, who helped set the hedonistic tone of the ’80s East Village; to Alexis Rockman’s take on Thomas Cole’s The Course of Empire, which imagines a time well before humanity and far after; to Raoul De Keyser’s performative abstractions.

In Books, Lauren Moya Ford reviews a sweet little collection of letters between critic John Berger and his son — “art,” she writes, “was their language for life, and for love.”In News, iconic Mexican architect Luis Barragán’s hot pink residence and horse compound is getting turned into an arts hub, and another icon, the late Flaco the owl, is lovingly celebrated in a new book. May his soul rest in peace.

Finally, Qatar’s only the third country in 50 years to build a permanent pavilion in the coveted Giardini at the Venice Biennale — Staff Writer Rhea Nayyar takes you through the ins and outs. Oh, and don’t miss our February mini crossword. Valentine’s Day is over, but we can still celebrate Gustav Klimt’s “The ____.”
