BBC news presenter Mishal Husain is known for her cool, calm manner, even when grilling the most bumptious politicians on Radio 4's Today programme.

So, her decision to respond publicly to the Duchess of Sussex's criticism of a 2017 television interview conducted by Ms Husain - to mark Meghan and Harry's engagement - has made waves.

'Mishal is not easily riled, to put it mildly, so this is a notable intervention,' one BBC source tells me. 'She clearly felt strongly about it.'

A couple of weeks ago, my husband and I were sitting in a bar on a Greek island sipping cocktails after a lazy day at the beach. Our two sons, Fred, 20, and Alfie, 18, started chatting to some girls nearby.

Soon their parents struck up a conversation and inevitably, one of the first questions was: ‘How many children do you have?’ Before I could jump in, Jeremy robustly replied: ‘We have four!’ Whenever anyone asks this question he always, always, says four. I’m not one for scenes, but I’m not exaggerating when I say that I want to kill him every time he does this. Because, of course, the person he’s speaking to always makes some polite comment about having so many children, which gives Jeremy, who’s 60, all the excuse he needs to launch into the tangled branches of our family tree.

For many years, Sue and Allan Griffiths thought they might retire to Spain. Summer after summer they returned to the south-eastern region of Murcia on holiday and dreamed of living there permanently.

But in 2022, they pivoted to Cyprus and ended up moving to the village of Xylofagou last year.

'After Brexit we didn't feel as welcome in Spain any more,' says Allan, 74, from Sandbach in Cheshire, who worked as a plant hire manager until he was 70. 'In Cyprus we discovered a non-judgmental atmosphere, a very accepting people – and many more pluses.'

As I drop another item on to the bedroom floor, my daughter, Sophie, fixes me with a quizzical look. We're sorting through my cupboards, so I can have a clear-out and she can assess if there's anything worth selling online.

Sophie's clearly perplexed by the sheer volume of items being discarded. 'You really want to get rid of all of these things?' she muses with disbelief, as she holds up a size ten lilac-coloured number from Reiss which I bought several years ago. Memorably (for me, anyway), I wore it for my inaugural appearance on Question Time.

It's not the only outfit to be jettisoned during this ruthless cull — from the royal blue Max Mara dress, accessorised with a gilt star-shaped belt, that I wore to a family wedding, to a yellow button-down frock sprigged with white roses and which, though only a few years old, would still see me through plenty of summer parties.
