A Prairie Home Companion
American Revival

May 2, 2022

Join us live at Red Rocks
for A Prairie Home Companion

Red Rocks is one of the Seven Wonders of Colorado. Actually, it was once listed as one of the Seven Wonders of the World! Nestled in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains just west of Denver lies a natural amphitheater where every rock star wants to perform, so why not stage A Prairie Home Companion's American Revival from the Red Rocks stage. Garrison Keillor will be joined by the Royal Academy of Radio Actors — featuring Sue Scott, Tim Russell, and Fred Newman — plus the Guy's All-Star Shoe Band led by Richard Dworsky performing with Pat Donohue, Stuart Duncan, and Gary Raynor. Plus special guest artists, including country superstar Brad Paisley, Southern bluesman Elvin Bishop and his Big Fun Trio, opera star Ellie Dehn, and vocalist Heather Masse.

Garrison says, “We’ve heard enough about despair, let’s take a night in the Colorado mountains to have a big time with Brad Paisley, Elvin Bishop, Ellie Dehn, the Guy’s All-Star Shoe Band, Heather Masse, and the Host Himself who is very happy to be turning 80.” It’s time to get together again with friends and rejoice in a bit of comedy, stories, and song! Join us on May 2, 2022, at Red Rocks for an unforgettable evening that can only be experienced in person!

GUEST PERFORMERS FOR OUR RED ROCKS PERFORMANCE
(all performances from A Prairie Home Companion)

ABOUT BRAD PAISLEY:
Brad Paisley has earned his place in country music history as one of the genre’s most talented and decorated male solo artists. His songwriting and unmatched showmanship have won him piles of awards — multiple GRAMMYs, American Music Awards, Academy of Country Music Awards, and Country Music Association Awards, including a highly coveted Entertainer of the Year honor and recognition as the most successful CMA Award cohost in history, alongside Carrie Underwood. A member of the Grand Ole Opry since 2001, Paisley has written most of his No. 1 hits, and in 2008 became the first artist to achieve 10 consecutive Billboard Country Airplay No. 1 singles.

ABOUT ELVIN BISHOP:
As a kid in Tulsa in the 1950s, Elvin Bishop could — if the conditions were just right — pick up WLAC, Nashville. He was captivated by Jimmy Reed’s piercing harmonica sounds coming over the airwaves. The blues cast a spell on him — one that’s never lifted. A founding member of Chicago’s groundbreaking Paul Butterfield Blues Band, he went solo in 1968, moved to the Bay Area, and continued a music career now spanning six decades. His dozens of recordings include Something Smells Funky ’Round Here (Alligator Records). Willy Jordan Jr., drums; Bob Welsh, guitar.

ABOUT HEATHER MASSE:
Known to many as a member of the acclaimed Juno Award-winning Canadian band The Wailin’ Jennys, Heather Masse has taken the stage at hundreds of venues across Europe, Canada, and the U.S. She appeared regularly on A Prairie Home Companion, and the versatile vocalist has performed with the bluegrass band The Wayfaring Strangers on NPR’s World Cafe and at Boston’s Symphony Hall with the Boston Pops Orchestra. Among her recordings: August Love Song, Lock My Heart (with jazz legend Dick Hyman), and Beautiful Dreamer (a duet album with Garrison Keillor).

ABOUT ELLIE DEHN:
Soprano Ellie Dehn has graced many of the world’s leading opera houses, from the Metropolitan Opera to Teatro alla Scala and Bayerische Staatsoper. But her love of music started during her childhood in Anoka, Minnesota. She was raised in a musical home — the granddaughter of a Minnesota Orchestra flutist and the daughter of a piano teacher — and she went on to study at Oberlin Conservatory of Music and the Academy of Vocal Arts in Philadelphia. The current season finds her traveling to Japan to perform the role of Rosalinde in Die Fledermaus with the Seiji Ozawa Music Festival, as well as returning to the roster of the Metropolitan Opera for several projects.

ABOUT THE GUY’S ALL-STAR SHOE BAND:
The Guy’s All-Star Shoe Band is led by longtime Prairie Home Companion music director Richard Dworsky. Keyboard player, composer, and improviser in any style, he also wrote the show’s script themes and underscores. Chet Atkins called Pat Donohue (guitar) one of the greatest fingerpickers in the world today. And Pat writes songs too — recorded by Suzy Bogguss, Kenny Rogers, and others. His recordings include Blue Yonder and Vicksburg Blues (a collaboration with Butch Thompson. Gary Raynor (bass) has performed with the Count Basie band and Sammy Davis Jr., with whom he toured for several years. He was first call for dozens of touring Broadway shows, including the first presentation of The Lion King. Multi-instrumentalist Stuart Duncan took up fiddle at age seven. Since then, he has chalked up a career that includes Grammys, a slew of Academy of Country Music Awards, and being named the International Bluegrass Music Association’s Fiddle Player of the Year nine times. He was a founding member of the Nashville Bluegrass Band and is perennially one of Nashville's most sought-after session musicians, performing on thousands of recordings.

ABOUT THE ROYAL ACADEMY OF RADIO ACTORS:
A well-known Twin Cities radio personality and voice actor, Tim Russell is a man of myriad voices. He appeared in the Robert Altman film A Prairie Home Companion and the Coen brothers’ A Serious Man. For decades, Prairie Home fans heard Sue Scott play everything from well-intentioned moms and ditzy teenagers to Guy Noir stunners and leathery crones who’ve smoked one pack of Camel straights too many. She is the creator of the popular podcast Island of Discarded Women. Sound effects man Fred Newman is an actor, writer, musician, and sound designer for film and TV. Turns out, no one is more surprised than Fred that he’s made a career out of doing what he used to do behind the teacher’s back — crossing his eyes, making sounds, and doing voices. He readily admits that, growing up, he was unceremoniously removed from several classrooms, “once by my bottom lip.”
