Pressure ulcer staging is complicated, and coders’ jobs are made more difficult by documentation holes and lack of knowledge of clinical criteria. The complexity of the disease process, combined with the frequent changes and updates to pressure ulcer codes in ICD-10-CM, can lead to recurrent denials if coders don’t arm themselves with the knowledge they need to ensure accurate reporting of diagnostic details.

Join expert speakers Sarah Humbert, RHIA, and Temeka Davis, RHIT, for this 90-minute webinar as they discuss the challenges of reporting pressure ulcers and the recent related ICD-10-CM coding changes.

At the conclusion of this program, participants will be able to:
  • Discuss the 2018 ICD-10-CM coding changes for pressure ulcers
  • Explain pressure ulcer staging and documentation to look for to meet coding guideline requirements
  • Present pertinent coding and clinical documentation guidelines for pressure ulcers to providers, coders, and CDI staff
  • Code a pressure ulcer that advances in severity during a hospital stay
  • Identify opportunities to improve documentation
  • Recognize when a query is needed for clarification and accurate code assignment of pressure ulcers
