ABOUT ROB FISHER: For four seasons conductor and pianist Rob Fisher headed up the Coffee Club Orchestra on Garrison Keillor's American Radio Company, and he remains a frequent Prairie Home Companion guest. He served as music director and conductor of the Encores! series at New York City Center from its inception in 1994 through 2005, and he was the original conductor and music director for Chicago and its Grammy Award-winning cast album, and supervisor of Chicago companies around the world. Keyboard player, composer, and improviser in any style, he also wrote the show’s script themes and underscores. He appeared in the Robert Altman film A Prairie Home Companion and the Coen brothers’ A Serious Man. For decades,  Sound effects man Fred Newman is an actor, writer, musician, and sound designer for film and TV. Turns out, no one is more surprised than Fred that he’s made a career out of doing what he used to do behind the teacher’s back — crossing his eyes, making sounds, and doing voices. He readily admits that, growing up, he was unceremoniously removed from several classrooms, “once by my bottom lip.”

RETURN TO LAKE WOBEGON with our newest archival release:

Behind the scenes of the 'From the Archives' series, the Prairie Home staff members sort through old recordings of 'A Prairie Home Companion' broadcasts, thoughtfully cull the best monologues, browse contemporary photos and press clippings, and remaster the audio files to modern specifications. This volume includes some of the best Lake Wobegon stories from 1983. The residents complain about overly warm spring weather; the Lake Wobegon economy is running on loyalty, deism, and nepotism; and the juniors prepare the prom for the seniors - kind of like social security. Rumors go around about Ms. Berge's torrid romance, and the host muses that telling lies about people is better than ignoring them completely. Lyle desperately tries to avoid needing his brother-in-law Carl's help starting his car in winter, and the quiet people of Lake Wobegon show they're having a good time at Christmas by humming and perhaps tapping their feet a little bit. All in all, it's a great collection of stories that have been unpacked from the archives after 35 years.
