Borscht Belt Festival

JULY 27-28, 2024 | ELLENVILLE, NEW YORK

Created by the Catskills Borscht Belt Museum, Borscht Belt Fest celebrates and pays homage to the Borscht Belt’s vibrant past and showcases its legacy and wide-ranging influence on contemporary American culture.

The festival takes place in downtown Ellenville and features stand-up comedy, art, live music, film, educational programming — and of course, food. Proceeds support the non-profit Catskills Borscht Belt Museum.

Meet Forward archivist Chana Pollack at Borscht Belt Fest
Saturday, July 27 | 2:00-3:00 p.m. ET

During its heyday, summer in the Catskills made a big impression on readers of the Yiddish Forverts. Each summer, subscribers jammed the newspaper's switchboards to ensure that their beloved daily was delivered to their Borscht Belt boarding houses, bungalow colonies, and resorts for the duration of their stay.

Loaded with classified Yiddish ads for Catskills farmland, boarding houses, hotels, and even Yiddish summer camps, Forverts readers and writers found a home in the Borscht Belt for well over a century. Join archivist Chana Pollack on a journey through the historic Forward archives and see what the tumult was all about. Forward editor-in-chief Jodi Rudoren will also join the session.
