Joint Commission creates Sentinel Event Alert for violence against healthcare staff

The Joint Commission is the latest healthcare heavy-hitter to call for better protection of healthcare workers, announcing the creation of Sentinel Event Alert 59, which aims to help organizations better recognize workplace violence directed by patients and visitors toward workers and better prepare healthcare staff to address workplace violence, both in real time and afterward.

Ensure monitoring of soiled utility, other pressure-sensitive rooms

Make a list of all areas that must have positive or negative air pressure and ensure those areas are checked regularly to avoid possible condition-level findings. For rooms in older buildings or areas that might have a harder time maintaining the correct air pressure, check every morning, particularly if expecting survey.

Check powered fire doors to ensure newly-clarified info is met

After the newest clarification from CMS and revisions to TJC’s Life Safety standard on providing building features to protect against fire and smoke hazards, it is recommended that healthcare facilities examine all automatic door arrangements.

TJC sentinel events declined again in 2017, but problems persist

The Joint Commission recently released its final sentinel event statistics for 2017. The same medical miscues again top the list; however, it seems encouraging that the total number of reported sentinel events declined for a second consecutive year while the number of self-reported incidents continued to climb.
