Jordan Parkhurst, killed in car crash at 17, remembered as a leader on and off the hockey ice
  • On Sunday night, hockey players, coaches and other supporters in Brewer and beyond left their hockey sticks and pucks out on their porches, some with the initials JP etched into them.

    It was a tribute to 17-year-old Jordan Parkhurst, a Brewer High School senior who died in a car crash on Brewer’s Wiswell Road on Saturday night.
‘Don’t mistake this collar for weakness,’ priest told Hampden murder suspect before fight
  • Shortly before a Bangor-area priest allegedly assaulted Philip Clark he told him: “Don’t mistake this collar for weakness,” jurors learned during the second day of Clark's trial.

    Hours after the July 11, 2018, fight between Clark and the priest, the Rev. Anthony Cipolle, Clark allegedly killed his sister-in-law, Renee Henneberry Clark.

Maine AG will add Appalachian Trail hiker’s case to review of chief medical examiner
  • The office of Attorney General Aaron Frey said Monday that it will add the contested finding that alcoholism contributed to the death of a Massachusetts hiker found in his tent in August to review of a Dr. Mark Flomenbaum, the chief medical examiner. The review was requested in March by a state lawmaker who added to his complaint after a Bangor Daily News story in which experts cast doubt on that finding.
Cleaning staff could access patient records at Blue Hill hospital, inspection finds
  • The federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services survey of the 25-bed critical access hospital found it was “not in substantial compliance” with the requirements for receiving payments from Medicare when the series of inspections concluded on July 17.
Portland voters will decide in March if they want to expand ranked-choice voting
  • Portland officials advanced an effort Monday night that would expand ranked-choice voting to school board, City Council and other municipal elections onto the ballot in March. The decision is another milestone for the state, which has become a model for the use of ranked-choice voting nationwide.
Hunters report seeing missing Bucksport woman in Orland woods
  • Two hunters in the area of Great Pond Mountain near Fish Hatchery Road called 911 at about 6:30 a.m. and reported seeing a woman whom investigators have tentatively identified as Aza Jerome Vasylyk, 56, of Bucksport.
Maine panel finds Uber discriminated against blind Falmouth woman with service dog
  • Patricia Sarchi said an Uber driver refused to give her a ride in early 2017 after seeing her service dog, saying “no dogs” and driving away, leaving her to take a taxi home. The Maine Human Rights Commission ruled on Monday that the ride-sharing company discriminated against Sarchi in what is apparently a first-of-its-kind case in Maine.
