2022 celebrates the anniversary of the Camino Ignaciano, 500 years after Ignatius set out from Loyola. The path starts in the foothills of the beautiful Basque Mountains, continues through the rolling vineyards of La Rioja, follows the meanders of Spain’s longest river, the Ebro, visits the majesty and might of Zaragoza’s ‘El Pilar’ cathedral, traverses the solitary desert of Los Monegros, before reaching the jaw-dropping, saw-toothed mountains of Montserrat and its stunning monastery.
Finally, 500 years after Ignatius of Loyola arrived, you will enter the Catalan city of Manresa, where the future saint and founder of the Jesuits, spent so much time.
Murray contrasts this lesser-known route with the Camino de Santiago, which is set to see record numbers of walkers this year. Join him in a walk through history, a discovery of everyday Spain, its cultures, its cuisines, its identities: a true ‘Slow Travel’ experience that allows a country to reveal itself with every step.
