The allergy tests lit up my back and arms like tiny, four-way stoplights. Angry, red welts flashed their terrible message — allergic to cats, allergic to dogs, allergic to fur. I cried because I knew what this meant. Our pets would have to go.

Our family of five lived on the Naval Air Station in Key West, Florida. My mother found neighbors willing to take our sweet dog, Tramp. My sister gave her guinea pig to one of her friends at school. But I begged my parents to let us keep my beloved cat, Grungy. (Keep reading)
