Explore the culture, history, landscapes and people of Lika in central Croatia with Mary Novakovich, author of My Family and Other Enemies.

Shipped off to Lika as a child in the 1970s to stay with relatives she barely knew, Mary Novakovich has been revisiting Croatia ever since, researching the story of her family’s often harrowing life: in 1941 her aunt was the only survivor of Serbs massacred by Croatian fascists; and her mother saved her grandmother from being buried alive when she was thought to be dead from typhus.

In 2004, Mary returned to Lika for the first time, in the challenging company of her mother, and she has made several further trips since then until the pandemic curtailed travel.

Join Mary to celebrate this lesser-known part of Croatia, which she describes as ‘a region of wild beauty battered by centuries of conflict’.

FREE to attend for our Travel Club members (you can sign up here if you are not already a member); for everyone else, tickets cost £5 which can be redeemed against a copy of My Family and Other Enemies.
