The Lord blessed us with another incredible weather day for our 2024 Golf Tourney, which was held on Tuesday, October 22nd at the Bent Tree Golf Course. We welcomed 18 teams of golfers to compete in this year’s tourney. We began our activities around 11:30 as we opened up for our Putting and Chipping contests. We had some excitement on the putting green as we had one contestant actually hole the putt. We also had a single golfer who was able to hit the chipping target and win that contest. They each were awarded a great prize. During this time our golfers, staff and kids also enjoyed a great lunch. After our Executive Director, Steve Lowe, sharing briefly about the ministry and our sponsors, as our golfers were called to their carts, our round began around 1:20. We had some incredibly competitive golf played throughout the afternoon, with some good-natured ribbing going on between some of the teams. As the round was completed we gathered at the outdoor pavilion near the clubhouse to award some great door prizes and our special raffle prizes, a $250 gift card to Woodstock Furniture Outlet and a Big Green Egg. After awarding our prizes we then recognized our tourney winners. You can see pictures of our winning teams and all other golf tourney photos at the links below. While having all of this fun we raised a funds to continue making a difference in the lives of those we serve through The Joy House. We’re grateful for sponsors, team captains, players, and prize donors who make this tournament the success it is. We’ll look forward to next October when we’ll again “Tee it Up for Teens.” |

The Joy House Academy, also known as the JHA, is not where I expected to land after homeschooling my children. Now that they are pursuing college educations, I found myself needing something to do, something with a God-honoring, called purpose, which led me to tutoring at the JHA. I have seen how God’s hand moves in the ministry at The Joy House, and the JHA has some very special students in our classroom, where I share in the tutoring responsibilities with other tutors under the leadership of the Director of Education. The JHA is both a school and a ministry for those who find their work there. The JHA has students of varying ages and grades, and the job of a tutor is one of adaptability to accommodate those differences. The JHA covers the required subjects for school - Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies - at appropriate grade levels for each individual student. The curriculum is produced by A.C.E. School of Tomorrow, and is a Bible based, Christian program, well-established and focused on academic learning while fostering Godly character in the students. The material is self-paced so that each student can achieve proper education within their own learning abilities. A tutor’s work at the JHA is to give academic guidance and grade lesson performance, yet being a tutor at the JHA is about more than a classroom education. As a JHA tutor, I have enjoyed the opportunities we have to get to know the JHA students. Aside from classroom work, sometimes the day consists of being able to listen as they share their likes and dislikes, their daily ups and downs, and to talk and laugh with them, too. As tutors, we do what we can to encourage the JHA students and model a Christ-like attitude for them. The JHA students become more than simply students as the tutors share joy in a student’s successes and empathizing in their setbacks. The JHA tutors see the students grow through their seasons of life and celebrate each student’s pace as they mature in their walk with Christ. Being a JHA tutor is a place where we can nurture a student’s responsibility and accountability to school studies. However, a JHA tutor also desires to share the love of Christ, to have some small part in inspiring a young person’s love for Him and a life led by God. He has given the JHA tutors opportunities for expressing our own hearts and minds of Christian faith and service. “Not that I have already attained, or am already perfected; but I press on, that I may lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus has also laid hold of me. Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 3:12-14 |

In Part 1 we were reminded that the Evil One is objectively real; he is a person. He seeks to break all fellowship between God and man. He does this with misdirection; these are the “lies” he is famous for. He is smart, strategic, powerful and above all, perverse, calling evil good and good evil (Isaiah 5:20). When we adopt these lies, we sin. In this article we seek a better recognition of when this is happening. The Enemy’s first lie is that evil only refers to major, horrific events like war, natural disaster, criminal assault, grave illness, marked disability, etc. Of course, tragedies happen and grievous losses do come. When they do, counseling is in order. We are to grieve with those who grieve. A mournful attitude is a beatitude. We need to carry one another when we are broken. When we do, we move outside ourselves, affirm the value of those who are hurting, and glorify the God who rescues. Our little troubles will still be there when we get home. But trauma and grief are neither sin nor subtle. Focusing only on trauma diverts us from the hidden seduction of the Evil One, temptation, which is inevitably accompanied by that famous bodyguard of lies. Unseen, God’s Enemy becomes our enemy. Recall the Lord’s prayer, “lead us not into temptation,” not that He would. The impetus here is that we are temptable, and we need the Father’s help to steer clear. On the other side of temptation is the Evil One, and God alone can deliver us. Satan prefers subtlety and secrecy. He likes to work from behind a blind, in darkness. He wants us to think we are thinking for ourselves. In Ephesians (6:11) Paul the Apostle calls him “wily,” (crafty, scheming, tricky, slick). |
