Media Winners & Losers

MEDIA WINNER:
Joy Reid

The inauguration of the next President of the United States, Joe Biden, will be a major media event, even if it won't be a big in-person event, and both broadcast and cable news networks have big plans.

NBC News and MSNBC are no exception, with a full two days of special coverage. That includes the primetime special "The Speaker: One-on-One” on Tuesday night.

Host Joy Reid will sit down for an hour-long interview with Speaker Nancy Pelosi, to discuss, among many topics, growing "national security concerns as law enforcement prepares for the inauguration," in the wake of last week's attack on the Capitol, during which the Speaker's own office was violated.

D.C. is under major security lockdown for the inauguration, with National Guard troops in the city by the thousands. Just yesterday several thousand of those troops were temporarily deputized by the United States Marshals Service to empower them to make arrests ahead of expected protests and unrest.

Speaker Pelosi and other lawmakers were under direct threat last week when the electoral college results were presented to a joint session of the House and Senate. The ensuing riot and invasion of the Capitol building including a heavy focus on her office. Reid is expected to discuss the experience at length.

It's good timing, and a great media win on the eve of inauguration.

MEDIA LOSER:
MyPillow

MyPillow CEO and Donald Trump confidante Mike Lindell was media loser in Monday's Green Room, but this isn't a re-run. Today it's his company that's losing. In a pretty big way.

Speaking with Minneapolis Fox affiliate KMSP, the pillow magnate said that Bed Bath and Beyond, Kohl’s, and Wayfair have all told him they will no longer sell his product. Lindell told KMSP that the retailers are bailing because of pressure on social media from “leftist groups.”

His announcement rocketed across social media, earning praise for the companies from blue checks and vows of never patronizing them again from hashtag land.

None of the chains, however, have yet confirmed Lindell’s claim.

In an interview with the Right Side Broadcasting Network (via CNBC), Lindell bashed the retailers for being afraid of public backlash.

“Kohl’s, all these different places. … These guys don’t understand,” Lindell said. “They’re scared. Like a Bed Bath & Beyond, they’re scared. They were good partners. In fact, I told them, ‘You guys come back anytime you want.’"

Having made himself a folk hero to his audience, and the retailers to everyone else, it's hard to imagine why there'd be any reconciliation.

The company could be crippled for the sake of those political owns. That's the opposite of winning.

The A-Block

'Precipitated'

In his first TV interview since resigning the role of attorney general, Bill Barr said Donald Trump’s false 2020 election claims “precipitated” the storming of the Capitol by the president’s supporters.

Which is kind of a big deal.

“The mob was fed lies. They were provoked by the president and other powerful people," he said.

OH WAIT no, that was actually Sen. Mitch McConnell this morning on the Senate floor who delivered that devastating dose of destruction.

Lower Than Nixon

Trump will leave office with the lowest average approval rating in Gallup’s history, a result that is stunning for more than one reason.

On Monday, Gallup released the results of its final tracking poll, and it showed Trump with the lowest approval — 34 percent — of his entire presidency. On top of that, Trump finished with the lowest average approval of any president in Gallup’s history.

By a lot.

‘A Sophomore Year Term Paper’

MSNBC’s Chris Hayes ended his show Monday night teeing off on the “1776 report” released by the Trump administration that’s already received a great deal of blowback. Hayes let them have it.

‘Look in the Mirror’

CNN’s Erin Burnett went on a tear Monday night against Senator Lindsey Graham for his continued defenses of President Trump.

“If you want to talk about weak, Senator Graham might want to look in the mirror, because definition of a weak figure in American history is this,” she said, before showing a montage contrasting Graham’s past attacks on Trump with his more recent praise.

JUST IN

Two members of the National Guard have been pulled off of their assignment to protect the inauguration ceremony for Joe Biden. This comes as U.S. intelligence remains concerned that right-wing extremists might be planning to disrupt the ceremonial transfer of power to the new president.

Hawley

Regnery Publishing announced Monday that it would publish Sen. Josh Hawley’s upcoming book, The Tyranny of Big Tech, after Simon & Schuster dropped it.

“It’s discouraging to see them cower before the ‘woke mob,’ as Senator Hawley correctly calls it,” Regnery president and publisher Thomas Spence said in a statement obtained by Mediaite. “Regnery is proud to stand in the breach with him. And the warning in his book about censorship obviously couldn’t be more urgent.”

Be Silent

Washington Post columnist Max Boot is calling on cable providers to consider dropping networks including Fox News, Newsmax, and One America News.

And he wants the FCC to do something about them, too, although that's not within the agency's purview.

“Anyone who cherishes our democracy should be grateful to the management of Facebook, Twitter and other social media sites for their newfound sense of social responsibility,” Boot wrote. “We should expect at least the same level of responsibility from broadcast media — and in particular from Fox News, which has the largest reach on the right.

It's an unusual thing to see journalists demanding some speech be silenced. Right? That's still unusual, yes?

Maria Bartiromo Spreads Wild Conspiracy That ‘Democrats Infiltrated’ Capitol Riots in ‘MAGA Clothing’
OPINION

Fox Business anchor Maria Bartiromo claimed that “democrats infiltrated” the Capitol building on Jan. 6 and disguised themselves by “putting on MAGA clothing.” It is not clear from where she gets this baseless conspiracy theory, which is just another in a long line of conspiracies she has recently put forth on her television shows.

Executives at Fox News insist that Bartiromo is a news anchor and not an opinion host, which given her curious support of President Donald Trump’s baseless claims of a stolen election, is a ruse called out by many. Fox News has apparently rewarded Bartiromo’s unique style of anchoring by giving her a try-out to host her own opinion program at 7 PM, which is currently titled Fox News Primetime.

The context of Bartiromo’s comments come as an estimated 25,000 National Guard troops swarm the nation’s capital to provide security for the inauguration of President-elect Joe Biden just two weeks after a deadly insurrection of Trump supporters swarmed the Capitol building. Reports have surfaced that a QAnon supporting insurgent might try to infiltrate the security detail dressed as a national guard member, which Bartiromo noted before making the claim.

It is not clear what source Bartiromo is referencing in...

Must See Clips/Tweets

"What is this word ‘complicity?’"

After First Lady Melania Trump posted a farewell address on Monday night, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert’s Laura Benanti shared her own goodbye video.

For her final Melania Trump impression, Benanti brutally mocked the first lady with a song and dance number envisioning her unsuccessful move back to New York City.

It mostly can't be quoted in a newsletter. Best to just watch it and laugh.
