JPMorgan Chase is planning to require all employees to be in the office five days a week, which would end hybrid work arrangements for thousands in its workforce, sources said. The change, expected to be announced in the coming weeks, would build on current rules that require managing directors and about 60% of the bank's staff to be in the office full time.
Workplace diversity, equity and inclusion efforts have faced significant setbacks over the past several years, but companies can make progress with DEI by adopting a "North Star" approach that involves defining a clear, positive vision and establishing measurable milestones, write Kristen Etheredge, Sree Kancherla and Vaishali Gupta from management consulting firm Kearney. AT&T uses this strategy to achieve increases in the representation of people of color and women in management, they write.

Employee development can often feel performative, but Julie Winkle Giulioni suggests strategies to make it more authentic, including moving beyond scripted plans, getting more feedback and insight from colleagues and viewing development as an evolving process. "Once employees begin getting reactions from their audiences, it becomes natural for them to start sharing their growth plans with others, elevating the quantity and quality of support they'll receive," Winkle Giulioni writes.
Ants have been found to hold grudges against rival colonies, according to a study in Current Biology that involved exposing ants to aggressive encounters and observing their subsequent behavior. The findings indicate that ants remember previous hostile interactions and react more aggressively towards those colonies in future encounters, demonstrating a form of associative learning.
Happy Friday dear SmartBrief on Workforce readers!
Today’s Friday Fave comes from reader Staci A, who recommends the podcast Happier with Gretchen Rubin and her sister, Liz Craft. Rubin is a former attorney turned writer and happiness guru. The weekly podcast focuses on little things people can do to improve their lives and maintain happiness.
I listened to Wednesday’s podcast A Little Happier: When Your Life’s Work Chooses You: The Beauty and Burden of a Calling. Rubin asked an interesting question: “Is a ‘call’ the same as a ‘moment of obligation?’” Meaning, when you decided to enter your field, did you see a problem that needed fixing and feel an obligation to be the one to fix it? That’s a smart question -- and a really good way to assess opportunities and career (or even life) choices.
So thank you Staci A for your terrific suggestion. Much appreciated!
