JPSO deputies arrested for fatal shooting; Cantrell unmasked at Mardi Gras ball

By Chad Calder

DEPUTIES ARRESTED:  A Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office investigation into the fatal shooting of a homeless man by two deputies last week warranted their arrest on manslaughter charges. The announcement came late Monday, and you'll find the details here.

MORE MISERY: The other big stories of the moment, unfortunately, involve violence and death. In one, a UNO student who took an Uber alone Friday night ended up dead in the hospital the next morning, and at this point, there are more questions than answers.

Meanwhile, details continue to emerge on the fatal shooting during a custody swap out in front of the Costco in New Orleans Sunday night. And on Monday morning, Ahmad Howard, described by family members as a sweet 16-year-old boy who loved to goof around and make people laugh, was shot and killed near his Betty Street bus stop in Marrero.

UNMASKED: What does Mayor LaToya Cantrell have in common with Boris Johnson and Gavin Newsom? All made themselves political targets by doffing their masks at crowded events, now that video and photos have surfaced of Cantrell — as well as some council members — not wearing a mask at a recent Mardi Gras ball.

GETTIN' STINKY, BRAH: Kenner's been heating up as the mayoral election draws near. On Monday, new details emerged about the financial relationship between trash magnate Sidney Torres IV and two city officials who helped Torres' IV Waste win a major garbage contract there. Reporter Faimon Roberts and WWL-TV's David Hammer have the details.

Thanks for starting your day with us.
