Judge in Chauvin trial to make key rulings today

Good morning, Minnesota! Here are today's top news headlines for you:

Get ready for some bad hair days this weekend🌬️💨💨 The dry, mild trend stays with us, with highs in the 50s for most of Minnesota this weekend. If you're planning some outdoor time, be ready for some gusty winds -- as high as 25 to 32 mph at times. Later on Sunday, we may get some precipitation. Find the latest from Updraft.

A judge's decision today could delay or move the Derek Chauvin trial.

In the wake of the record settlement between Minneapolis and George Floyd's family, the judge overseeing the Chauvin trial is set to rule on defense motions seeking to postpone the trial and move the venue from the current Hennepin County Government Center in downtown Minneapolis. Opening statements are currently scheduled for March 29, and so far a dozen people are seated for a total of 14 jurors needed for the trial.

The active case count is rising again, with new hot spots emerging in the state.

There has been a noticeable rise recently in the count of known, active cases. The latest data shows 9,338 -- marking seven consecutive days with active counts above 8,000, a stretch not seen since late January. While state officials continue to keep close watch on a Carver County outbreak that includes the U.K. strain, they also warned of another outbreak in the eastern end of Minnesota’s Iron Range centered around the town of Aurora.

Yesterday, Minnesota saw two big pandemic milestones: 500,000 cases have topped and 2 million shots in arms.

Those milestones come after COVID-19 vaccination counts bounced back from the dismal number earlier this week. Officials say the vaccination counts will likely go up in the coming weeks, as they expect 100,000 doses/week of the single-shot J&J vaccine in Minnesota in the coming weeks.

Here are Minnesota’s latest COVID-19 statistics
  • 6,762 deaths (6 new)
  • 501,458 positive cases; 97 percent off isolation
  • 23.4 percent of Minnesotans with at least one vaccine dose
  • 77 percent 65 and older with at least one vaccine dose

Are you vaccinated? Congratulations, and here's a "VIP discount" for you.

In an effort to speed up recovery from the pandemic, some Minnesota business owners are offering cash incentives for COVID-19 vaccinations. And they're not just going to employees — some are rewarding customers who get vaccinated, too.

At 11 a.m. today: A look at the ethics of the vaccine rollout. The chaotic vaccine distribution happening across the country has elicited strong feelings about who should be getting the vaccine now and who should be waiting their turn. This morning, host Angela Davis talks with with two experts about the ethics of vaccine distribution.

Do you have an ethical question about the vaccine rollout? Share your question with us by calling 651-227-6000 or 800-242-2828 or tweeting @AngelaDavisMPR during the live show.
