Our Mural Rookies (MR) Project offers aspiring mural artists the chance to showcase their talent in the field of mural painting. As part of this program, we undertake the task of repainting the exterior wall of moshimo cafe + space in Hayama once or twice a year. Our most recent collaboration was with artist Kazu Tabu. To ignite inspiration for this particular artwork, we posed the question, “What’s Your ‘What If’?” (as “moshimo” translates to “what if” in Japanese) and Kazu provided an intriguing response. He pondered, “What if we could actually perceive the gods, goddesses, and spirits of Hayama with our own eyes?” Kazu’s answer manifested as a representation of a mountain deity in the form of a tanuki, also known as a raccoon dog. Although these creatures are rarely sighted by human eyes in Hayama, they possess great significance within the community. |
