It’s that time of year again: drop in and discover the stories behind the museums, no appointment required.

New on View: Julien Hudson

Julien Hudson’s Portrait of a Young Woman in White is now on view in Gallery 2200.

One of the earliest-documented painters of African descent in the United States, this pioneering portraitist enlisted fellow gens de couleur libres as his subjects.

In the Press

“Surprises? I love them. What is the point of seeing a show that merely confirms what you already know?”

—Brian Allen reviews The Bauhaus and Harvard for The Art Newspaper

“It’s important, especially at Harvard, in this space of so much privilege, to think about communities that have been historically excluded, and how to bring them into the fabric of the university in a meaningful way.”

—Harvard senior Mahnoor Ali speaks about her experience as a student guide with The Harvard Gazette

“Untamed black hair and deep furrows don’t hide eyes that, even cast downward, convey a soulful eloquence that’s hard to look away from.”

Harvard Magazine on our new exhibition Japan on Paper

“Mine would be the Wertheim Gallery at the Harvard Art Museums. The collection is extraordinary.”

—Harvard president Larry Bacow on his favorite space on the Harvard campus, for The Harvard Gazette

“As this show amply demonstrates in the work of Anni Albers and others, a key to the success of the school’s best-known artists was their ability to move fluently between the fine and commercial arts, the handcrafted and the machine-made, and between two and three dimensions.”

—Belinda Rathbone reviews The Bauhaus and Harvard for The New Criterion
