Boy's Home Summer Fun!

Trinity Church of Marble Hill has once again provided another week of summer fun for our boy's home by treating them to a week away at St. Simons Island. We are so very grateful that Trinity continues to value the investment in our teens, as they have done for many years. Summer camp is always a special week for our residents, and we are grateful that our boy's home had this opportunity.
Though we do have school year-round at The Joy House Academy, summertime provides for more special opportunities like camp for the kids to get away and relax. The Academy is currently taking a two-week summer break, but the teens will hit the books again in July. We covet your prayers for the teens and their families as they share this extended break together.

Counselor's Corner -
Parents, Grow with Your Teens

By: Bill Wattenbarger, PhD

Parenting adolescents can be an especially hard thing. But truly, it has never been harder to be an adolescent than now.
Small children are taught to obey their parents. Parents must take authority because life is dangerous, and a child cannot know enough to escape dreadful harm. Now, fast forward to age 12, more or less.  Things start to change.  Children cannot remain children forever. The very word adolescence means "becoming adult."
Adolescence is a kind of uniquely human metamorphosis which takes 12-15 years to complete. The changing is almost imperceptible day to day and sometimes not to the parents' liking. This transformation extends from being a member of the family to being an extension of the family to autonomy. These changes cover physicality, sexuality, language, reason, sociality, independence, identity, meaning, purpose, morality, spirituality and for the faithful, identity in Christ. These changes occur simultaneously and add up to how we shall live (as adults), and why.

$489,000 Raised!
At our banquet, Executive Director, Steve Lowe, shared that our Girl's Home is currently full, and yet we continue to receive call after call of families in need looking to find a resource for their daughters. We eagerly want the opportunity to meet the needs of these families. Our "Second Home for Second Chances" Campaign has made headway with $489,000 currently given or pledged. We are believing that with your help, we will bring that number to $600,000 very soon so that we can break ground in 2019 to build our second Girl's Home, opening up seven more slots for teen girls. Will you join us on this mission? You can join us by helping us spread the word, spearheading a "Fill a House to Build a House" spare change campaign at your office, church or civic organization, or by giving online today.  For more information, please feel free to e-mail Steve@thejoyhouse.org.
