June 4th marked National Cancer Survivors Day – a day to celebrate the increasing number of people who are surviving cancer here in Ireland. To celebrate this important day, we made a very special announcement and were incredibly proud to welcome Republic of Ireland international footballer and survivor of cancer, Chloe Mustaki, as an Ambassador for Breakthrough Cancer Research!
Chloe embodies our mission and values. Having been diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma at 19 years of age, she was determined not to let her diagnosis define her life. We see the same passion, drive and commitment to her profession reflected in our researchers, which makes Chloe a very fitting ambassador.
We are also absolutely delighted with the news that Chloe has been named on the squad for the Women’s Soccer World Cup. Chloe’s place on the team is a testament to her determination and resilience and we wish her and her teammates every success in Australia and New Zealand.

THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING #SUNSMART
We’re all delighted to see the long, bright summer days and want to enjoy all the benefits of being able to spend more time outdoors. It’s really important that we stay protected and be Sun Smart.
UV radiation from the sun is the leading cause of skin cancer so it is important to protect ourselves from the damage it can cause to our skin.
No sunscreen can provide 100% protection, so it should be used alongside other protective measures like covering up with clothing, wearing a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses and limiting our time in the midday sun when UV rays are at their strongest.

A WARM WELCOME TO OUR 2023 SUMMER SCHOLARS!
The Breakthrough Cancer Research Summer Student Scholarship is an initiative to facilitate the partnership of students with research teams, and to foster the education of the next generation of cancer research leaders.
Please join us in welcoming our three Summer Scholars of 2023:
Nina Carlos-De Clercq of University College Cork
Yingru Zhou of Dublin City University
Natalia Bednarz of Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland
All three students will spend the summer researching their chosen speciality.
Their research projects include investigations into Glioblastoma (the most common primary brain tumour in adults), a new targeted cancer drug delivery system that will bring anti-cancer drugs directly to cancer cells, and using blood biomarkers to develop a test to diagnose ovarian cancer.
SPOTLIGHT SHONE ON BREAKTHROUGH CANCER RESEARCH IN TG4 DOCUMENTARY
We were absolutely overjoyed to feature in a brand-new documentary called Biseach ón Ailse, which aired on TG4 on the 22nd of June at 8:30pm.
The must-see documentary features the inspiring stories of Ann Marie O'Sullivan (second from left below) and Caitríona Greene (second from right below), who have experienced a cancer diagnosis. Alongside these moving accounts, the work of some of Ireland's dedicated cancer researchers are also featured, with the documentary exploring revolutionary breakthroughs in cancer research in the rapidly evolving world of research and innovation in Ireland.
