SelectCoder Tip of the Week

When coding diabetes with neurological conditions in ICD-10-CM, whether a causal relationship can be assumed depends on the type of neurological condition. For diagnoses of neuropathy and neuralgia with diabetes, assume a causal relationship (unless the provider states another cause) because they are listed specifically under “with” in the ICD-10-CM index. However, a causal relationship cannot be assumed for NEC diagnoses such as “other stated neurological complication” and a linkage to diabetes must be documented.
