When coding a secondary site of the cancer and the primary site is unknown, ICD-10-CM code C80.1 (malignant [primary] neoplasm, unspecified) should be added for unknown primary site. A biopsy-proven malignancy for which a primary site cannot be found constitutes 0.5% to 7% of all cancer patients.

Why did you get into this line of work?

Early in my career I learned that the U.S. medical reimbursement system is like no other in the world: every site of care has a different payment system, providers are often reimbursed different amounts (some are not reimbursed at all), and every new product and procedure is required to jump through a myriad of hurdles to gain coverage from the various payers throughout the country.

I have always loved solving problems and building puzzles. Therefore, I was attracted to understanding this ever-changing puzzle.
