SelectCoder Tip of the Week

Coders should not assign ICD-10-CM code R78.81 (bacteremia) to indicate the presence of sepsis. Bacteremia only indicates the presence of bacteria identified in the bloodstream, not the infectious process. Sepsis should be reported with the appropriate code identifying the specific type of sepsis present.
