SelectCoder Tip of the Week

Open wound codes are used for wounds caused by trauma. Do not assign an ICD-10-CM code for "open wound" unless the etiology of the wound is related to trauma. Do not use Z codes for any aspect of care of a trauma wound (e.g., no Z code for dressing changes, drain care, or suture removal). Report instead the appropriate subsequent care seventh character with the injury code.
