SelectCoder Tip of the Week

When osteomyelitis is specified as due to diabetes mellitus due to an underlying condition, code first the underlying condition, and assign ICD-10-CM code E08.69 (diabetes mellitus due to underlying condition with other specified complication), followed by the appropriate code to specify the type and location of the osteomyelitis. This classification presumes a cause and effect relationship between osteomyelitis and diabetes when no other cause is documented. Use the appropriate code for the osteomyelitis after coding diabetes with other specified manifestations.
