SelectCoder Tip of the Week

ICD-10-CM codes in category E36.- (intraoperative complications of endocrine system) are complication codes and should only be coded when the provider specifically indicates a relationship between the operative procedure and the specific complication. If no relationship between the condition suspected to be a complication and the operative procedure is stated, the provider may be queried to clarify if the condition is classifiable as a complication.
