SelectCoder Tip of the Week

Pneumonia should be coded to the specific causative organism using a combination code when a specific ICD-10-CM code is available. Evaluate all available clinical documentation and assign the most specific diagnosis code for pneumonia. When the causative organism of bacterial pneumonia is known but no combination code exists, assign code J15.8 (pneumonia due to other specified bacteria).
