Q&A: Proper use of the -X{EPSU} modifiers

SelectCoder Tip of the Week

CPT code 29876 (arthroscopy, knee, surgical; synovectomy, major, two or more compartments [e.g. medial or lateral]) is used to report a "major" synovectomy and should not be reported with code 29875 (arthroscopy, knee, surgical; synovectomy, limited [e.g. plica or shelf resection]); when a major synovectomy is performed, the limited synovectomy is considered inherent in the more extensive service and NOT reported separately.
