SelectCoder Tip of the Week

CPT codes 99446, 99447, 99448, and 99449 are used to report interprofessional telephone/internet assessments and management services provided by a consultative physician. These services include a verbal and written report to the patient’s treating/requesting physician or other qualified healthcare professional. Code 99446 should be reported for 5-10 minutes of medical consultative discussion and review; 99447 for 11-20 minutes, 99448 for 21-30 minutes; 99449 for 31 minutes or more.

Why did you get into this line of work?

Early in my career I learned that the U.S. medical reimbursement system is like no other in the world: every site of care has a different payment system, providers are often reimbursed different amounts (some are not reimbursed at all), and every new product and procedure is required to jump through a myriad of hurdles to gain coverage from the various payers throughout the country.
