SelectCoder Tip of the Week

Do not assign ICD-10-CM code J18.9 (pneumonia, unspecified organism) when the causative organism or underlying cause of pneumonia is reported in the clinical record. If the organism or cause of pneumonia is known, a combination code should be assigned. When pneumonia is diagnosed in a patient who also has chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), the coder should assign J44.0 (COPD with acute lower repiratory infection) and the type of pneumonia, and sequence according to the focus of care.
