SelectCoder Tip of the Week

A relationship may be assumed between hypertension and any condition classifiable to ICD-10-CM code category N18.- (chronic kidney disease) or N26.- (unspecified contracted kidney). This is due to the pathology of hypertension, which impacts renal function, often resulting in kidney dysfunction. The exception to this assumption is when clinical record documentation reports that hypertension has been caused secondary to the kidney dysfunction (renovascular hypertension). When this is the case, the hypertension is secondary to the renal dysfunction and is coded using an ICD-10-CM code from category I15.- (secondary hypertension).
