Do not assign ICD-10-CM code J18.9 (pneumonia, unspecified organism) when the causative organism or underlying cause of pneumonia is reported in the clinical record. If the organism or cause of pneumonia is known, a combination code should be assigned. When pneumonia is diagnosed in a patient who also has chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), the coder should assign J44.0 (COPD with [acute] lower respiratory infection) and the type of pneumonia, and sequence according to the focus of care.
