Here goes winter to summer, in a week. Tonight it should get down near 30. Tomorrow will bring a short lived dose of summer, with highs near 60. But temps will fall again in the evening, and the rest of the week will be cold, cloudy, with rain and snow showers likely. Get the latest on Updraft.

In the wake of Chauvin's guilty verdicts, the U.S. Department of Justice is opening a sweeping investigation into the Minneapolis police.

Attorney General Merrick Garland announced the probe this morning, just a day after former officer Derek Chauvin was found guilty of murder and manslaughter in the killing of George Floyd last May.

There’s already an investigation into whether Chauvin and the other officers involved in Floyd's death violated his civil rights. The new review, Garland said, will be more sweeping. It puts the entire Police Department’s record under scrutiny, over the scope of years instead of a single incident. It will also look into the department’s use of force history, handling of misconduct allegations.

At the Minnesota Capitol, state lawmakers are also grappling with police reform.

A police accountability hearing in the Senate is tentatively set for next week — but the Legislature’s leading Republican is offering no guarantees of action. Senate Majority Leader Paul Gazelka says it’s too soon to commit to any particular changes while citing this week’s guilty verdict in the Chauvin trial.

Gov. Tim Walz, however, said it would be a mistake to delay. There’s more to do, he said — and no clearer proof of that than the impending funeral of Daunte Wright, another Black man killed by police this month in Brooklyn Center.

In COVID-19 news, 13 new deaths from the virus were reported in Minnesota today. Meanwhile, the pace of vaccinations in Minnesota is slowing.

Last week, as many as 40,000 Minnesotans per day were getting a new first dose on average. Now that number has fallen by a third. The reduction in vaccinations is largely the result of the state receiving fewer vaccine doses.

Daunte Wright loved making people laugh and, after becoming a father in his teens, relished the role of doting young dad, according to his family and friends.
