The Czech government is expected to adopt a neutral position on a proposal by MPs to ban the sale and serving of energy drinks to children under 15, with a recommendation for further discussion, according to a draft document prepared for Wednesday’s cabinet meeting. The proposal seeks to regulate energy drinks similarly to alcohol and cigarettes, including advertising restrictions and age verification for sales via vending machines and online. Although the government supports regulation in principle, it questions classifying energy drinks as addictive substances and suggests the need for public debate. The proposal also faces opposition from the Association of Non-Alcoholic Beverage Producers, who argue that education, rather than restrictions, is a better approach.
Czechia will begin constructing its first open prison for women in Velké Přílepy, near Prague, next autumn, according to the Prison Service. The facility, designed for 30 inmates, aims to help women transition back to society. Currently in the permit stage, the project will take about 11 months to build and is expected to be completed by fall 2026 at a cost of CZK 78 million.
The Czech Republic’s first open prison, established in 2017 in Jiřice, shows promising results, with a reoffending rate of 17.2% compared to the national average of 70%. Inmates participate in work and animal care programs, including training guide dogs.
The Czech hockey team triumphed over Switzerland 5-2 in their final Karjala Cup game in Helsinki, keeping alive their hopes of defending last year’s Euro Hockey Tour title. To secure first place, they now rely on Sweden defeating Finland in regular time. Justice Ministry employees will protest in the coming week in front of the ministry building in Prague, demanding better wages. Union leaders highlight a high turnover rate, with 230 out of 420 employees leaving over the past three years. According to union chair Eliška Hronová, wages are around CZK 10,000 lower than at other ministries, leading many staff to seek higher-paying jobs at institutions like the Czech National Bank and the Finance Ministry.
Justice Minister Pavel Blažek has proposed a wage increase for ministry employees, supported by CZK 700 million from unallocated judicial funds, pending parliamentary approval. The protest aims to back this proposal, emphasizing systemic wage disparities.
