Outcome - Climate Change dinner debate in cooperation with Euramet and Estep

Ricardo Serrão Santos, MEP

  • When we have to tackle issues like climate change, we cannot turn back.
  • Reality of the climate change is not a question of pessimism or optimism.
  • Climate change and the warming of the planet is in fact the main crisis we are facing.
  • The problem with this global threat is that it cannot be fighted solely with new knowledge and new technologies it needs new governance and new policies.

Emma Woolliams, Chair of the European Metrology Network for Climate and Ocean Observation, EURAMET

  • Europe is leading the global response to climate change in the framework of the 2015 Paris agreement with the  commitment to achieve net zero climate greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
  • Knowledge is power, but knowledge with quality assurance is wisdom.
  • Metrology can provide the firm foundation, the quality assurance that all these measurements rely on. I think it’s here that Europe can also lead the world, not just in the action to prevent climate change but also in providing high quality observations that give us the evidence-based policy we need.

Christophe Jacob, Head of Liaison Office with EU, World Meteorological Organization

  • Insuring high quality measurements, transparency and transability of data is really critical for climate monitoring.

André Obregón, Evaluation and Quality Control Manager, Copernicus Climate Change Service
  • What we do in the Copernicus Climate Change service is basically providing climate data sets from satellites, from ground-based measurements to have a good understanding of the past climate and the present state of the climate. We are not only looking at the past we want also to look into the future by providing seasonal forecast and climate projections.
  • Temperature is not the only kind of variable that has been affected by climate change. There are many other factors, many other indicators of climate change: the greenhouse gases, which are closely related to temperature raise, glacials are retreating, sea level is rising globally and for soil moisture has slight a negative trend.

Valentina Colla, University SSSA Pisa, Coordinator of Center ICT for Complex Industrial Systems and Processes

The final aim is to realize a totally connected production model where you can coordinate not only the different steps of production process but you can also have a direct link with suppliers and with customers in order to meet the demand and in order to optimize the whole value chain.
The optimal exploitation of data and the extraction of relevant information will be a key element for the implementation of concept which are circular economy, cross-sector cooperation, industrial symbiosis. The basis is sharing information.

Enrico Malfa, Tenova, R&D Director Metals

  • Steel is never consumed but it is continuing transforming, this is the first advantage of steel in reducing CO2 emissions because we can recover material that we already produced
  • The DNA of steel industry is the circular economy
  • Today we are very close to the thermodynamic limit of our process, de-carburization is really a new challenge for steel industry.”

INNOWWIDE CALL 1 APRIL 2019 – EMPOWERING SMES TO GO GLOBAL!

Accessing the international market can be difficult, particularly for SMEs. Yet, SMEs are the drivers of innovation. This is why the new international project INNOWIDE aims to ease European SMEs’ way for international market entry in countries such as Japan, by funding their Viability Assessment Projects (VAPs) with local Japanese partner companies. Each VAP features a co-creation partnership with a local partner (subcontractor) – e.g. a supplier, customer, consultant, legal advisor, research and development provider, collaborator or absorber- from one VAP’s focus country. The projects include a wide variety of activities to explore the practical, technological and commercial viability of an innovative solution and how it fits to meet local conditions and demands.

The first call will open on 1 April 2019. More information can be found at http://www.innowwide.eu. Interested Market Experts can also submit their profiles in: https://expert-community.eurekanetwork.org/#/
