K4I Forum Governing Board working breakfast

Outcome of the event

The first debate under the chairmanship of the Ms. Maria Carvalho enjoyed a great participation from the part of the MEPs, all of them being interested to discuss the future framework for artificial intelligence in the EU with Ms. Lucilla Sioli, Director of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Industry, DG CONNECT.

The debate ended with useful conclusions and suggestions:

  • One of the biggest challenges for our future is to create an ecosystem enabling ideas to flourish openly and to reach the market quickly enough to become solutions for a sustainable economy.
  • The digital transformation processes are a big opportunity for a renewed prosperity in the whole Europe.
  • Innovation can re-shape our way of living and this is particularly true with artificial intelligence.
  • European culture, traditions and history will make the difference for creating the ethical principles around which we can create a human-centric development of the AI technologies.

Very exciting topic at K4I Forum working breakfast: Artificial intelligence in Europe.

Franc Bogovič, MEP
The meeting this morning was excellent!

Pierre Barthélemy, Executive Director, Cefic
I liked the discussion this morning with the EC very much. AI is a theme that touches on the energy area, as well as a huge number of others, of course. It’s a good format for K4I meetings, and I’m glad it’s repeated in Oct and Nov.

Greg Arrowsmith, Policy Advisor, Eurec
The past decade has known a surge of breakthroughs in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Increased computer power, the availability of big data, as well as advances in research have led to ever more AI and big-data applications being used in all domains of our lives.

The 1st AI & Big Data Innovation Summit organised by the Knowledge4Innovation Forum is taking place from 2 – 5 December in the European Parliament in Brussels. This is an outstanding opportunity to meet and discuss with newly elected MEPs and the new Commission about the opportunity for Europe to become a global leader in AI and data driven innovations and how policy can support and if necessary, regulate AI and big data developments.

Artificial Intelligence in EU Process Industry

a View from the SPIRE cPPP

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is today one of the most hyped technologies. It has become strongly relevant in many aspects of our lives from natural language processing to navigation and trading in stock exchanges. AI refers to systems or applications which can make decisions and can take actions without being explicitly programmed to do so, based on data collection, usage analysis and other observations. AI is not one universal technology, it is rather an umbrella term that includes multiple technologies such as machine learning, reasoning, computer vision and natural language processing (NLP) that, individually or in combination, add intelligence to applications. The broadness of the technology portfolio, its rapid pace of change, and the increasing power of the proposed solutions will find within the process industries a significant field of implementation, leveraging some very specific characteristic of these industries.
