The Advocate's Top Headlines

with Matthew Albright | Assistant metro editor

If you want to understand the magnitude of the scandal unfolding at LSU, read the first few paragraphs of this story, which sums up the revelations yesterday about the university's handling of alleged sexual misconduct and domestic violence.

The fallout continued into Friday night, when the University of Kansas announced football coach Les Miles, who is accused of sexually harassing students when he was at LSU, was being placed on administrative leave.

Those weren't the only bombshells that dropped Friday. When a Baton Rouge Police Department officer got arrested, he wrote a memo alleging widespread corruption in the narcotics unit, where he worked. BRPD later arrested another officer and moved four other officers into the patrol division, effectively cutting the narcotics unit in half.

The Advocate obtained the officer's memo, and it makes startling claims that officers stole drugs, conducted illegal searches, and coerced prostitutes into setting up drug dealers, among other misconduct.

At the Advocate, we take our role as investigative watchdogs very seriously. This kind of journalism is difficult and time-consuming. And it's impossible without our subscribers — as a locally-owned newspaper, we rely on their support.

If you're a subscriber, thank you for being part of the team. If you're not, please consider joining us here.

Thanks for reading, and have a great weekend.
