Media Winners & Losers

MEDIA WINNER:
Kasie Hunt

The host of MSNBC's Way Too Early dropped a pre-6 a.m. bomb on the cable news world when she announced her sudden departure from the network where she has plied her trade since 2012.

"Some personal news, as they say," Kasie Hunt tweeted — along with clip announcing her exit. "Thank you to all of the viewers, reporters, lawmakers and everyone else who’s gotten up extra early to help make ⁦@WayTooEarly⁩ better. I loved doing this show. More soon!"

Soon turned out to be just several hours later, when Variety reported (and Mediaite subsequently confirmed) that Hunt signed a new deal with CNN — where, according to Variety, she'll be a major part of the network's push into streaming content.

But lest you view Hunt's decision to jump ship as a lateral move, or even a demotion, take note of the massive raise she received for switching networks. Variety reported that CNN's offer, ranging from between $1 million and $1.5 million per year, represents a significant pay bump for the MSNBC host.

Whether CNN's streaming gambit will ultimately work is anybody's guess. But Friday's move shows that the network is prepared to spend lots of money to get their new platform off the ground.

In this business, any venture with money behind it is worth being involved in.

MEDIA LOSER:
Bill O'Reilly

It seemed like a big opportunity for the former Fox News host to get back in the limelight — when it was announced that he'd be hitting the road with former President Donald Trump for a four city arena tour this December. But so far, these events that seemed like they would attract a great deal of attention have been met by the ticket-buying public with a collective shrug.

Politico reported early Friday that the Trump-O'Reilly shows slated for Florida and Texas in mid-December have gotten off to a very sluggish start at the box office. A search of the Ticketmaster and Axs sites offering the tickets for sale shows that thousands upon thousands of seats are still available for all four of the gigs.

O'Reilly gets singled out here for two reasons: First, he engaged in an absurd attempt to deny the lackluster sales. The conservative commentator flat rejected the premise that his Dec. 12 date in Orlando is not selling, telling Politico that notion is "bullsh*t." He was made to look utterly ridiculous when an image of a Ticketmaster map of available inventory showed that hardly any tickets for that date have been sold.

And the second reason O'Reilly gets the heat here is that, ultimately — at rally after rally — Donald Trump has proven he can draw a crowd. Bill O'Reilly, in recent years, has not.

It doesn't seem like that will change anytime soon.

‘What's the Use?’

After a massive, months-long decline, Covid-19 cases are beginning to go back up across America — particularly among those who have not yet been inoculated.

“This is becoming a pandemic of the unvaccinated," CDC Director Rochelle Walensky warned at a briefing on Friday

In light of the increasing numbers, a fascinating moment on Fox News made headlines Friday — as one of the network's contributors voiced some vaccine skepticism, only to get authoritatively rebuked by one of Fox's leading hosts.

The sequence played out on Fox & Friends — where Lawrence Jones, filling in for regular co-host Brian Kilmeade, got into a debate with Steve Doocy about the Covid vaccine. Jones argued that the return of mask mandates to Los Angeles, even among the vaccinated, takes away incentive for getting the shots.

“When you put out disinformation and people are saying why get the vaccination?" Jones said. "We are not going to return to normal anyway? What’s the use of doing it? Why?”

Doocy's retort was just three words, but covered everything that needed to be said.

"You won't die."

Three Strikes You're Out!

A wild scuffle broke out at a minor league baseball game in New Jersey on Thursday — where players from the Frontier League’s New Jersey Jackals and Sussex County Miners jumped into the stands after allegedly having beer thrown on them.

The scene evoked memories of the infamous "Malice at the Palace" NBA brawl in 2004. There was pushing and shoving and multiple players had to be held back.

A truly shocking confrontation.
