Today is Thursday. Temperatures will be in the high 60s to low 70s with partly sunny skies in the north and rain in the south. Here's what we're talking about in Maine today.

Millinocket-area schools delay opening as school employees, students test positive

  • An East Millinocket School Department staff member hired as a musician at the wedding reception at the Big Moose Inn tested positive after coming in direct contact with the wedding party and guests, according to Superintendent Eric Steeves. Now, the superintendent and five other school department employees have tested positive.
  • A cluster of coronavirus cases in Massachusetts has been traced to a bachelorette party in Rhode Island late last month, health officials in both states said. Nineteen guests who attended the late July gathering at an undisclosed location were sickened, authorities said. Seventeen were from Massachusetts.
Out-of-state homebuyers flock to Aroostook County amid coronavirus pandemic

  • Tucked away in northern Maine, Aroostook County is hours away from major cities such as Portland or Boston. Good-paying jobs, outside of traditional farming and agriculture, were scarce. The population was declining and aging, as younger residents quickly left after school to look for work elsewhere.

But the COVID-19 pandemic, like it has for so many other things, has rapidly changed all that.

Maine wants prisoners given jobless benefits to pay the money back
  • The Maine Department of Labor continued to pay unemployment benefits to several prisoners after Gov. Janet Mills reversed a state decision in May to deem them eligible and now it wants that money back. At least 15 to 20 inmates continued to receive benefits after Mills' order, according to a lawyer involved in a federal lawsuit about the seizure of the benefits.

As enrollment at Unity College grows, so do calls for president to resign

  • Dozens of Unity College alumni and students this week called for President Melik Peter Khoury to resign — even as the school touted unprecedented growth and record enrollment.

A letter, signed by 61 people, was a response to the private liberal arts school’s major directional shift, announced earlier this month when the president said Unity would permanently move from its traditional campus learning model toward a hybrid and distance learning one.
How lawyers are rallying to help Maine tenants amid a wave of evictions
  • Eviction proceedings paused in mid-March when the pandemic hit, allowing those struggling financially to shelter in place at their homes through much of the summer. But since courts resumed earlier this month — mostly remotely — it’s been a tenuous start as renters and others grapple with the new judicial processes that have been altered by the pandemic.

Food shortage means Maine hunters should have productive bear season

  • Bear hunters who head into the woods on opening day, Monday, Aug. 31, will have the odds in their favor, according to a state wildlife official, because a lack of natural food on the landscape will likely make bears more apt to visit the bait sites where hunters will be waiting.
