Kelly knows, but says no to QB reveal

Brian Kelly's response to a question Monday as to whether LSU had chosen a starting quarterback reminded of the answers former baseball coach Smoke Laval often used to give:

"Yeah, but no."

Yes, LSU has picked a starter. But no, Kelly isn't revealing whether it's Jayden Daniels or Garrett Nussmeier until right before kickoff Sunday against Florida State (6:30 p.m., ABC) in the Caesars Superdome. He gives his reasons here. I give my reaction in a short column here.

We continue our preview series by focusing on the Tigers' totally revamped special teams, anchored by Leah Vann's main story (what we call in the news biz a "mainbar"). I've got another column on the subject; Wilson Alexander has a profile on special teams coordinator Brian Polian, a member of a famous football family; and Sheldon Mickles tells us what it's like to play a gunner on kick coverage. You can find those three stories by clicking here.

The season may be about to open for the Tigers, but the transfer portal never closes. Click here to see which LSU player entered the portal Monday.

While Coach Kelly isn't telling how the depth chart shapes up at quarterback, our Patrick Magee gives us his take on the LSU depth chart at every position. See if you agree who he has on top behind center.

Lastly, we have another excerpt from my book "LSU by the Numbers." Monday marked six days until kickoff, so we have a profile on the Tigers' best No. 6, the gregarious Rohan Davey.

That's all for now (isn't that enough?). We'll be back with plenty more content tomorrow and every day throughout the college football season.
