Situational Analysis | October 4, 2023

It's Wednesday and National Cinnamon Roll Day!  (It's also National Taco Day, so something for everyone. 🌮)

What You Need to Know

  • Kevin McCarthy lost his Speakership yesterday when 8 hardline Republicans voted against him, along with all the Democrats. All 3 Utah House members voted to support him and call his ouster hypocritical and a new low. McCarthy won't run again, but so far, Reps. Jim Jordan, Steve Scalise and Kevin Hern are weighing a run for Speaker, while Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene posted on X that the only candidate she would support for Speaker is Donald Trump. The House has been sent home and will reconvene next week.

  • There's a special election tonight to replace Rep. Quinn Kotter in House District 26. Delegate registration begins at 5:30 and the election begins at 6:30. There are three candidates: Matthew Scott MacPherson, Dennis Brian Tenney and Kyle W. Erb.
