Every year, Northeast Ohio celebrates inductions to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. But this year, the enshrinement-week festivities have a decidedly brown-and-orange feel, from the Hall of Fame preseason game to Cleveland’s Joe Thomas being inducted along with eight other greats. We’ll have stories, Subtexts, photos, analysis, columns and other coverage all weekend long. And next week, I’ll be on vacation, so social medial editor Kristen Davis will fill in. Look for her thoughtful notes here. -- Laura |

Joe and Annie Thomas: When Joe Thomas fell for a star basketball player and fellow student at the University of Wisconsin, he asked her if he could take her out on his canoe. Mary Kay Cabot tells the story of how Joe met Annie and made a life in Cleveland. Progressive HQ: Progressive is closing its main campus and committing to its employees working from home, which has left Mayfield’s budget millions of dollars short. Luckily, the village has more than a decade of surplus to fix the problem, reports Sean McDonnell. The village of 3,400 people is projected to have a $1 million to $3 million deficit each year, but is sitting on $42 million in reserves. Marijuana law: The medical marijuana businesses backing a proposal to legalize recreational, adult-use cannabis submitted another 6,545 signatures Thursday in their last opportunity to qualify for the Nov. 7 ballot. Laura Hancock reports the Coalition to Regulate Marijuana Like Alcohol needs 124,046 valid signatures from registered voters in at least 44 of Ohio’s 88 counties to get on the ballot. The campaign’s first batch of submitted signatures was short by 679 signatures, kicking off a 10-day “cure period” that allowed the campaign to make up the shortfall. Today in Ohio: A state office focused on organized crime is investigating Akron-based FirstEnergy Corp. in connection with the company’s admission of bribing Ohio’s former House speaker and top utility regulator. We’re talking about dark money and the state attorney general’s Ohio Organized Crime Investigations Commission on Today in Ohio, cleveland.com’s daily half-hour news podcast. |

Early voting: Sunday is Ohioans’ last chance to vote early at their local board of elections before next Tuesday’s special election on State Issue 1, reports Jeremy Pelzer. That’s because there will be no early, in-person voting on the Monday before Election Day under new state election rules that took effect in April. Backers of the changes say election workers need that time to prepare for Election Day. Campaign ads: Backers and opponents of Issue 1 have bought the equivalent of wall-to-wall airtime for the final week before the election, reports Andrew Tobias. The “yes” side is spending around $5.9 million while the “no” side is spending around $5.3 million. |

CIFF director: Marcie Goodman, the longtime executive director of the Cleveland International Film Festival, announced her plans Thursday to step down from the position at the end of June 2024, reports Joey Morona. Drought map: Less than 2% of Ohio is now considered to be in a drought, according to Thursday’s update from the U.S. Drought Monitor. Zachary Smith reports that signals that the end of the state’s drought is near. Police dog: After an outcry from residents, Bedford Heights has reunited a police dog with the officer who trained the K-9 and is transferring departments. Officer Ryan Kaetzel and his dog, Bosco, are back together after Kaetzel transferred to Strongsville, Molly Walsh reports. |

COVID numbers: The number of new COVID-19 cases reported in Ohio climbed for the fourth week in a row, from 2,054 last week to 2,666 this week, reports Zachary Smith. Saving You Money: You can have cheap, fast, easy and good — but you can’t have all four. Saving money is ultimately about making tradeoffs and realizing that you can’t have it all. That's why Sean McDonnell is coining the “golden rule of being frugal.” |

Lachelle Jordan: Months after the five-day disappearance of Cleveland EMT Lachelle Jordan, police have made no arrests as authorities cite “inconsistent evidence” in the investigation, reports Olivia Mitchell. Torture accusation: A Cleveland man accused of torturing and raping his girlfriend while holding her captive last week has been ordered detained on a $350,000 bond. John Tucker reports Preston Anderson, 39, is accused of a litany of heinous abuses while holding his girlfriend inside their shared home in the city’s Fairfax neighborhood. Cheer lawsuit: A federal judge on Wednesday dismissed a lawsuit filed by a former Avon Lake cheerleader who accused the country’s top competitive cheerleading organizations of failing to protect him from sexual abuse. Adam Ferrise reports the judge ruled that because the cheerleader was 16 at the time, no criminal conduct existed, a necessary component of the lawsuit. |

HOF: For fans heading to the Pro Football Hall of Fame for the enshrinement ceremonies Saturday, a First Down Fest is available with vendors, bands, interactive games and more. Expect enshrinement-week festivities to have a decidedly Cleveland feel, with Browns great Joe Thomas being inducted along with eight other individuals, reports Marc Bona. Orchestra tickets: Single tickets for the Cleveland Orchestra’s 2023-24 season go on sale at 10 a.m. Monday, reports Paris Wolfe. The schedule features performances from classical music’s biggest stars and includes 14 guest artists debuting with the orchestra. CIA leadership: Leadership transitions can be tricky at any cultural institution, but Kathryn Heidemann’s productive first year as president and CEO of the Cleveland Institute of Art appears to have benefited from a seamless handoff planned several years ago by the institution’s Board of Directors. Steven Litt reports CIA, founded in 1882, is an important Cleveland institution with a long, influential history as one of the most important colleges of art and design in America’s industrial heartland. Earthquaker: Akron is not just the hometown of music legend and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee Chrissie Hynde, Devo and The Black Keys. The city is also the home base of EarthQuaker Devices, one of the most popular and respected boutique guitar-effects pedal companies in the music world, reports Malcolm X Abram. Saturday is EarthQuaker Day, the one day of the year that EarthQuaker opens its doors to the community for factory tours, live music from local and national bands, pedal demos, special pedal sales and other promotions. Things to do: It’s the first weekend of the last full month of summer, and Joey Morona has 17 things to do, including the BorderLight Fringe Festival. |
